Amanda Roberts, Women's Lacrosse
Sophomore Amanda Roberts netted six goals in the first round of the NESCAC women's lacrosse tournament at Bello Field on Sunday afternoon. The 14-11 victory was Tufts' 14th win of the season, a new program record.
No. 8-seeded Amherst was clinging to a 4-2 lead in the first half when Roberts went to work. Her goal with 4:13 left in the half narrowed the lead to one, and the top-seeded Jumbos trailed by a single goal heading into the break. Roberts picked up right where she left off following the intermission, scoring her 35th goal of the season just over a minute into the second half. The Jumbos rolled off another four consecutive goals, capped by a Roberts free position shot to give them a 9-5 lead with 18:47 left.
After the Lord Jeffs narrowed the lead to just two goals, Roberts netted her fifth tally of the game — and third with an assist from senior co-captain Chrissie Attura. The game was still in doubt with under five minutes to play, as Tufts was barely hanging on to a two goal lead, but Roberts iced the victory with her sixth goal of the game and 40th of the season.
Roberts also finished with an assist and three caused turnovers. On Friday, in a 13-7 win over Bowdoin, Roberts tallied two goals. With the Jumbos down two in the first half, Roberts scored two straight goals, and Tufts never trailed in the game after that point. Roberts currently leads the team in goals and points.
Chris Degoti, Baseball
Freshman Chris DeGoti continued his outstanding rookie campaign on the Hill, earning saves in all three contests this weekend at Colby to help earn the Jumbos a berth in the NESCAC Tournament. Tufts' closer shut the door on the Mules, utilizing a sharp curveball and a quick fastball to baffle the Colby hitters in his trio of appearances.
In the latter game on Saturday, DeGoti came on in the eighth frame and worked 1.1 no-hit innings, walking just one batter and striking out two. In the first contest of the day, the freshman spelled sophomore Jack Dilday in the fifth inning and closed the game out, earning the save after giving up zero runs on two hits and three strikeouts.
In his first outing of the weekend, DeGoti hurled a perfect ninth inning, striking out two Mule batters to preserve Tufts' 5-3 come-from-behind victory. Additionally, in the Jumbos' mid-week contest against UMass Dartmouth, the freshman pitched three no-hit innings, as two hit-by-pitches were the only blemishes on his resume that day.
DeGoti moved to the top of the NESCAC standings in saves on the season and, with five, has been the anchor of the Tufts bullpen thus far this year.
