Tufts gets artsy with a variety of events tonight

Hip hop for social change festival hits campus today


    A panel discussion on hip hop's role in society and politics in Africa will take place in the Granoff Music Center in Room 115 today at 4 p.m. The talk includes panelists from various disciplines and countries. Those in attendance will include Comrade Fatso and Outspoken, Zimbabwean activists; Niambi Young, a Fletcher graduate student and Egyptian hip hop specialist; and Magee McIlvaine, a documentary filmmaker.
    In addition, the festival will also feature an international hip-hop concert in Hotung Cafè at 8:30 p.m. tonight. Performers include Poetic Pilgrimage, Comrade Fatso and Outspoken & Band, Eli Efi, Mohammed Yahya and Afro DZ Ask. The event is sponsored by various Tufts programming and social activism organizations.

International conference to examine historic chronicles of Incan life


    Today will continue an academic conference on interpretations of one of the most important texts in Latin American literature. "The Royal Commentaries of the Incas" (1609) by Inca Garcilaso de la Vega celebrated its 400th anniversary this year. The book is one of the earliest histories of the Incan dynasty and the Spanish conquest of Peru. The conference will not only examine past interpretations of this work, but discuss where the text may take Latin American literature in the future.
    The conference will run from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Crane Room in Paige Hall. Panelists will include professors from many universities in the States such as Yale University and Brown University, in addition to academics from universities in Spain, Peru and Japan.

Tufts China Care's annual fashion show raises funds for abandoned children


    Tufts China Care, an organization dedicated to providing for orphaned or abandoned children in China, is throwing its largest event of the year today: the second annual Tufts China Care Charity Fashion Show. Tonight at 8 p.m., models wearing designs of the likes of Marc Jacobs, Kate Goldwater and Koi Suwannagate will grace the stage of Cohen Auditorium. A $10 ticket, available at the Cohen Auditorium box office, grants admission to the show, where hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served.
    All proceeds from the event will go toward Tufts China Care's efforts to provide medical assistance and aid in the adoption of abandoned children in China Care Foundation's medical orphan homes.
