Over 3,000 degrees to be given out during Commencement

The university is today awarding approximately 3,088 degrees in its two-phased Commencement ceremony.

The first phase, the All-University Commencement ceremony involving all Tufts schools, will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the Academic Quad and will include the Academic Procession and the Commencement address by University Professor Sol Gittleman.

Gittleman, former provost at Tufts, will also receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters. Four other individuals will also at this time be awarded honorary degrees.

Under Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy Kristina M. Johnson will receive an honorary doctorate of science, and Alva O. Way University Professor and Professor of History Emeritus at Brown University Gordon S. Wood (A '55) will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

Ann Hobson Pilot, the former principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the first and only African-American woman appointed to the position, will be awarded an honorary doctorate of music. The former chief of radiology at Kaiser Hospital-South San Francisco and first president of the Leonard Carmichael Society, Richard Dorsay (A '60, M '64), will receive an honorary doctorate of public service.

Following a brief recessional, graduates will move to different locations for the second phase of the ceremony, running from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., in which individual departments and schools will host their own ceremonies and programs.

Of all the degrees being awarded, 1,348 are undergraduate degrees, and 1,740 are graduate degrees. All numbers are approximate and are accurate as of press time.

At the undergraduate level, the School of Arts and Sciences is giving out 939 Bachelor of Arts degrees and 229 Bachelor of Science degrees. The School of Engineering will award 180 Bachelor of Science in Engineering degrees.

The remaining degrees will go to graduate students, with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences awarding 173 Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees, 114 Master of Science (M.S.) degrees, 79 Master of Arts in Teaching degrees, 21 Master of Fine Arts degrees, nine Master of Public Policy degrees and 40 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.

The Graduate School of Engineering will award 13 Master of Engineering degrees, 79 M.S. degrees, 51 Master of Science in Engineering Management degrees and 21 Ph.D. degrees.

The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy will award 275 Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy (MALD) degrees, 23 Master of Laws in International Law degrees, 31 Master of International Business degrees, 104 M.A. degrees and 12 Ph.D. degrees.

The School of Dental Medicine will grant 190 Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees, and seven M.S. degrees.

The School of Medicine will give out 146 Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees, nine M.D./Master of Business Administration in Health Management degrees, 12 M.D./Master of Public Health degrees, three M.D./Ph.D. degrees and one M.D./MALD degree.

The Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Services will award 28 Ph.D. degrees, three Master of Science in Basic Sciences degrees, 13 Master of Science in Clinical Research degrees, 45 Master of Science in Biomedical Science degrees, five Master of Science in Health Communication degrees, three Master of Science in Pain Research, Education and Policy degrees, 53 Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees and six Master of Science in Biomedical Science/MPH degrees.

The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy will give out 20 Ph.D. degrees, 42 M.S. degrees, four M.S. and combined dietetic internship degrees and 10 M.S./MPH degrees. It is also in conjunction with The Fletcher School awarding eight Master of Arts in Humanitarian Assistance degrees and one M.S./MALD degree.

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine will award 74 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degrees, two DVM/MPH degrees, three DVM/Master of Science in Laboratory Animal Medicine degrees, one DVM/Master of Science in Comparative Biomedical Sciences degree, five Master of Science in Animals and Public Policy degrees, and one Ph.D. degree.
