This weekend was a fruitful one for Tufts athletics, as the football, field hockey, volleyball and men's soccer teams all won their respective contests in front of home crowds.
In honor of their stellar play, two athletes — senior Tamara Brown of the field hockey team and senior quad−captain Caitlin Updike of the volleyball team — received NESCAC Player of the Week honors in their respective sports.
As she has over the past three seasons, Brown led the offensive juggernaut field hockey team to two victories last week, scoring two goals in each contest. Her most important goal was a game−winning, overtime strike against Wesleyan on Saturday at Bello Field.
After Brown scored that game's first tally, Wesleyan responded 10 minutes later to knot the game at one apiece. Eight minutes into overtime, Brown found the back of the net, earning the victory for the Jumbos and preserving Tufts' undefeated season.
On Wednesday, Brown scored two of three goals for the Jumbos as they steamrolled UMass Dartmouth 3−0.
Updike and the volleyball squad had several 3−0 victories of their own last week, sweeping all four matches (Smith, Vassar, Williams and Wellesley) at the MIT Invitational and a mid−week game against Brandeis as well.
In those five matches, Updike, the MIT Invitational MVP, averaged 4.6 kills and 2.8 digs per set. A two−time All−NESCAC First Team selection, Updike currently sits in fourth in the league in kills per game (3.73).
