Tufts Hockey downs Suffolk

The hockey team disposed of Suffolk University by a score of 6−1 on Tuesday night, though the Jumbos trailed 1−0 entering the third period. The tide turned in the final period, as two goals by freshman Tyler Voigt and four more from his teammates led the team to victory.

The play of Suffolk sophomore goalie, Cam Kelley, kept the Rams ahead through most of the game. Kelley made 32 saves in the first two periods to keep the Jumbos from hitting the back of the net. But keeping up his stellar play in the third period proved too difficult for Kelley as he let in six Jumbo goals.

The floodgates opened for Tufts five minutes into the third period when freshman defenseman Shawn Power started the scoring binge, tying the game at one. Just four minutes later, sophomore defenseman David Carson scored the eventual game winner for Tufts.

Minutes later Suffolk was in trouble with two players in the penalty box. Tufts took advantage of the penalties as junior Dylan Plimmer scored with a 5−on−3 advantage and Voigt scored while the Jumbos were one man up just 37 seconds later.

After four goals in under eight minutes, Tufts still wasn't finished. Voigt scored his ninth of the year with three minutes remaining in the game to bring the score to 5−1. Again Tufts followed one goal with a quick second when freshman Derrek Schartz scored just 24 seconds later. The Jumbos finished the game outshooting the Rams 51−30.

Sophomore Kyle Gallegos, NESCAC player of the week, notched two assists for the Jumbos' effort in the third period, and senior goalie Evin Koleini delivered a solid performance for Tufts, letting just one goal into the net and making 29 saves.

Tufts now looks to extend their four game winning streak when they take on Connecticut College at home on Friday for their first match−up of the year.
