I’d like to thank David Nickerson for highlighting the current condition of the art studios in Lane Hall (“Tufts and SMFA look to address lack of art studio space on Medford/Somerville campus,” 3/15/17). While there is no plan to renovate Lane Hall at this time, there is a conceptual plan to relocate the art studios to Barnum Hall in 2019. The move of research and teaching labs to the new Science and Engineering Complex this summer will create opportunities to use vacated spaces for new purposes, particularly in the 58,000-square-foot Barnum/Dana complex. The next step is to determine if Barnum is suitable for art studios, which require more infrastructure than typical classrooms. This and related matters will be addressed over the next several months during the feasibility phase and design development for the Barnum/Dana reuse project.
Sincerely,
Lois Stanley
