Approaching Southern Africa through images and performance
September 14I approach teaching with the conviction either that most students of history, including myself, are visual learners or that learning is enhanced by imagery and performances. This semester I'm teaching two courses on Southern African history to students who know little about the region. I constructed a "Southern African Film Festival" to run parallel with these courses so that my students, and anyone else in the Tufts community, will have the opportunity to engage with the region's images. Many Southern African landscapes are dramatically beautiful, as are the region's diverse peoples. Anyone with even an inkling of the region's history, however, will know that some of its historical and contemporary images are dark and frightening. Presentation of imagery is not without risk, so we should take care about those that we promote.

Explore, perform, connect at the Granoff Music Center
September 12On behalf of everyone in the Department of Music, I invite all students, faculty and staff to come be part of the rich and diverse musical community at the Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center. Through our events, classes, ensembles, private lessons and our extensive community music offerings, we offer opportunities to encounter music from the ancient past to the present day and from the far corners of the world to our neighborhoods next door.
Women's Volleyball Season Preview | Without star hitter, Jumbos must find new identity in '10
September 8If the 2010 volleyball team wants to have any chance of repeating its trip to the NESCAC finals — let alone making it back to the NCAA quarterfinals as it did last season — it will have to quickly fill a gaping offensive hole left by an injury to the team's biggest force.
Field Hockey Season Preview | Three by Four: Third trip to nat'l semifinals in sight
September 8After last season's 18−2 record, NCAA semifinal appearance and first−ever NESCAC title, the field hockey team enters this season with a target the size of the entire nation on its back, and it could not be more ready to handle the pressure.
A Tufts policy guide to sex, drugs and everything else
September 8The day a student moves onto campus, they trade in the rules of Mom and Dad for the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a time-out in their childhood bedroom for time in the Nashua Street Jail. Unfortunately, the latter is significantly less cozy.

Planned Quran burning day incites hatred
September 6By now, I'm sure almost everyone knows about the controversy surrounding the construction of a mosque near Ground Zero, but how many people know about the "International Burn a Koran Day" that will take place Sept. 11? It is within our [First Amendment] rights to express when, how and what we believe. However, it's mind-boggling to see that the bigotry of yesteryear still plagues our society and our views.
A Room with a Preview
August 31For many incoming freshmen, the idea of sharing a room with a complete stranger is the most nerve-wracking element of the new semester. It is only natural, then, that an increasing number of students are opting to pre-select their roommates online in an effort both to ensure roommate compatibility and to mitigate the difficult adjustment of learning to live with someone else.
Theater Review | Curtain opens on a new year of theatrics
August 31The foreign language placement exam may be the only official assessment Tufts freshmen complete during orientation week, but a new Jumbo's energy and patience are also tested to the extreme during these first few days on campus. The never-ending stream of handshakes and prepackaged bonding conversations about hometowns and planned majors can quickly grow harrowing, so weary young Jumbos take note: The best tonic for exhaustion is neither coffee nor Red Bull, but laughter.
