Natalie Girshman | Love on screen

Our second trope is one that starts off many classic love stories: love at first sight. Two strangers' eyes meet across a crowded room, or on a train or city street, and their fate is sealed with one glance. It's as beloved by the makers of Disney movies as it is maligned by legions of online commentators. In our current era of virtual connection - where it's possible to discover Google and be disappointed in a new crush all in an hour - why does the idea of love at first sight linger on? And how can the dedicated scholar of love tropes best dissect it?

Jordan Bean | Sacked

We love our athletes, but they don't have to love us back. We want them to care about the games as much as we do, but they don't have to.

Lex Erath | Sugar & Spice

Imagine walking down the streets of Boston one afternoon, minding your own business, and someone runs up to you and asks you to do the daily weather for the local news station. Maybe you're holding an iced coffee, which you drop in surprise, or perhaps you pause mid-text and look up suspiciously, trying to spot the hidden cameras for the prank this guy is trying to pull on you. But this is no joke; their weatherman has just walked off the set after throwing a massive hissy fit and is refusing to go on.

Supreme Cuts' new album provides dazzling soundscapes

Over the past several years, a new form of R&B has gained popularity in the indie music community. Fueled by the end of the golden age of artists like R. Kelly and a newfound interest in dark, electronic music, this type of R&B bridges various genres and has begun creeping into the mainstream. Typically characterized by emotive electronics and vocals that float into the murky background, this new style of music has become quite ubiquitous: everyone - from Miguel to thousands of no-name bedroom producers - has rallied behind it.

Eva Batalla-Mann | Valuable Delusions

The semester is in full swing and it's hard to think that a little over a week ago I was in the sunny, tucked away whistle-stop town of Ojai, Calif. Coming back to Tufts after being home for a while is always a little bit of a culture shock. Returning home to hellos from every passerby, and drum circles in the park on Sundays accompanied by robust dancing, reminds me that there are places where the pace of life slows down compared to caffeine-fueled college life. Sometimes I forget. I forget what it's like to sit and read a book for hours in Ojai Coffee Roasting Co. while familiar faces come and go.

Nash Simpson | Throwblack Thursday

Honorable citizens, randos, gremlins and freshmen alike, thanks for choosing to take part in the excusable waste of time that is this column: "Throwblack Thursday." My column's name of course deserves explanation, so I'll start from the beginning.

Aaron Leibowitz | The Fan

If the world made sense - if the NCAA were a sensible organization that gave a damn about the well-being of the young men and women it purports to represent - then the NCAA's statement on Tuesday in response to the first-ever attempt by college athletes to unionize would seem reasonable, irrefutable, even.

Anastasia Korolov | Back to the Present

Some of you aren't going to know why I'm writing this. You're going to stare at this paper, wrinkling your forehead in confusion. Maybe you'll raise an eyebrow questioningly. That's okay, though. Because some of you will understand exactly why I'm writing this. Of course, it doesn't matter who understands, because I'm writing this for everyone.

Carolina Reyes | Senior Thoughts

Returning to my final semester at Tufts is difficult. It is bittersweet, as people say. I am excited to enjoy all of the perks of being a senior - free Tufts paraphernalia and Senior Pub Nights - but radically adjusting my lifestyle, accepting new responsibilities and leaving a place that I have happily called home for the past three years is sad as well. Yet as I reflect, I feel as though this bitter-sweetness, discussed by those that graduated long ago, fails to capture the most salient emotions that the majority of graduating seniors are experiencing.

Ice Hockey | Tufts loses two more close games to Trinity, Wesleyan

The men's hockey team continued its season-long struggles over the weekend, dropping back-to-back home games to Wesleyan and No. 13 Trinity. The losses to their two NESCAC foes makes five consecutive losses for the Jumbos, and with just three of 13 home games remaining, the team is at risk of going winless at home. This weekend's results put the Jumbos at 3-13 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

Tyler Maher | Beantown Beat

The Super Bowl is this Sunday, but the New England Patriots won't be playing in it. That's because, for the second year in a row, they were stopped just one game short of the nation's biggest sporting event. Last year they were beaten by the Baltimore Ravens, who overcame a 13-7 halftime deficit to score 21 unanswered points in the second half and sail off to Super Bowl glory.

Dani Bennett | Scenes From Spain

After only a few weeks in Spain, I was recently informed that a typical person from Madrid is called a "gato," a simple word meaning "cat," but that comes with a more complicated explanation and requires some unpacking. There is, first and foremost, the historical aspect, as the name is homage to the Spanish leader who captured Madrid from the Moors in the eleventh century. This man could climb walls and was, for this talent, nicknamed "el gato." Ever since then, Madrilenians have been referred to as "gatos." Among other things, this led to the Madrid rugby team being named "Gatos de Madrid."

CSL to request removal from sexual misconduct appeals process

At its upcoming meeting on Feb. 5, the Committee on Student Life (CSL) will propose a change in the Tufts University bylaws that would allow for sexual misconduct appeals to be handled by the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) rather than the CSL.
