Bates Motel' shows promise as prequel to classic film

We all know about Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror movie, "Psycho" (1960). Norman Bates and his twisted motel of horrors are embedded in popular culture ?? visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood even have the treat of seeing the eerie motel on the studio tour. "Psycho" is definitely a gem in the horror film genre, for it is a rare find to watch a good horror movie ?? after all, ridiculous premises and awkward build?ups of tension frequently mire even the most promising flics.

Jumbos drop two of three to Bates

Following a strong showing on an 11?game spring break and a win in its home opener against Mass. Maritime, the Tufts baseball team was eager to begin its 2013 NESCAC schedule against Bates. But despite the momentum they brought into the series from that first home game, the Jumbos lost two of three games against the Bobcats, as they struggled with the same inconsistent offensive play that has plagued them for much of the season.

Ethan Sturm | Rules of the Game

I've watched a lot of sports in my life. I've played nearly as many. But in all of that time, I've never seen anything quite like what happened in Sunday's NCAA basketball tournament game between Louisville University and Duke University.

Revised sexual misconduct policy leaves room for improvement

As the national public discourse surrounding sexual assault and rape has converged around recent stories like this month's case at Steubenville High School in Ohio, Tufts students and faculty continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the recently updated Sexual Misconduct Policy - specifically with respect to its accessibility, and the support and respect it lends to victims.

Justin Timberlake's '20/20 Experience' lacks confidence, originality

After seven years of mediocre movies and assorted stints on Saturday Night Live, Justin Timberlake is finally back with a new album. "The 20/20 Experience" is one of the most highly anticipated albums of the decade, selling almost one million copies in the first week after its release. Unfortunately the new Timberlake record, his first since "FutureSex/LoveSounds" in 2006, does not deserve the hype.

With horsemeat scandals in England, where horse DNA was found in processed meats, in Ireland, where a food company's Bolognese was found to contain five percent horse, and in Greece, where chicken nuggets were found to contain horsemeat this past Tuesday, horsemeat is quite a contentious topic. I understand wanting to know what you are eating; in fact, I highly recommend being aware of what you consume. However, if we are "Big on the Pig," cow?craving, pork?guzzling, red?meat?eating Americans, why hate on horse? I've been thinking about this since the England and Ireland scandals broke back in January and from my research, horse does not seem so bad. So from this point on, I pledge that every land mammal I eat will be horse. Actually, let me correct that statement. I will only eat horse until horse is mass?produced the way some of our other meat products are, but until then, horsemeat or no meat. Now, let me tell you why.

Inside the NCAA | Madness rivets nation as Sweet 16 matchups commence

It's tough to argue that this year's NCAA Tournament hasn't been exciting. The upsets have come in spades, as Florida Gulf Coast University, the first 15-seed to ever reach the Sweet 16, has dunked its way past Georgetown and San Diego St., and La Salle has fought its way to the fourth round, most recently knocking off the polarizing Marshall Henderson and Ole Miss. Everyone who picked Gonzaga for the Final Four are grieving over Wichita St.'s rout of the Bulldogs, while Oregon has showed why that No. 12 seed they received was a bit misleading.

Walker Bristol | Notes from the Underclass

If it's easier for a man to be complacent, chances are he will be. Ironically, he'll shout and fight zealously to maintain that comfort. Most of all, he'll seek to silence those saying his complacency, his comfortable privilege, is unjust.

G.J. Vitale | Who's on First?

What makes a mascot great? Is it the antics? Or the rich history? Maybe they have a witty name or an exceptional appearance. Some schools have live animals and others have the costumed variety, while others have neither and a handful manage to have both.

Melissa MacEwen | The Roaming Fork

For a moment, pretend you are a sperm whale. You feed on squid, but squids have sharp beaks. To protect your intestines, you secrete a substance called ambergris - a greasy, tar?black sludge that coats your innards. Now let's pretend you get sick, and for whatever reason, you cough up your ambergris, at which point it floats off into the ocean, to be seasoned by the surf and salt, until it washes up on a remote beach, smelling sweetly of the sea. This "vomit" - which is sought out by beach combers around the globe - could be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Really.

Burt Wonderstone' proves anything but incredible

The far?from?incredible "Incredible Burt Wonderstone" features Steve Carell in a role that seems better suited - maybe even perfect - for Will Ferrell instead. It is, after all, the story of a man?child who, after losing his money and fame, must learn to become more responsible in order to regain his fame, and also get the girl. Consider "Elf"(2003), "Talladega Nights" (2006) and "Anchorman" (2004) as background. It simply isn't Carell's type of character or humor, and the film suffers for that.
