Field Hockey | Tufts dodges upset-minded Colby

Before the No. 9 field hockey team traveled to Colby Saturday, no one thought the 0-3 Mules would be much of a challenge for the Jumbos. But after a scoreless first half, it was Colby that struck first and, suddenly, Tufts found itself on the wrong side of a 1-0 game.

Zach Drucker | The Loser

rom an early age, my passion was football… and Gushers. Those things are delicious. My dad and his dad before him have owned season tickets to the Jets since the '70s, when the Jets played in Shea Stadium. That's right: There was a time when America's worst baseball stadium was also America's worst football arena. I would accompany my dad and my grandpa to every home game, back in the good ol' days when you could carry a tin of homemade cookies and a metal thermos of hot chocolate into a stadium without security concluding you had a bomb.

Football | Tufts kicks off hopeful season on Saturday at Hamilton

Heading into Saturday afternoon's season opener, the football team would like nothing more than a repeat of last year's first game, when Tufts cruised to a 21-10 victory over the Hamilton Continentals on Ellis Oval. In that game, quarterback Anthony Fucillo (LA '11) threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and then-sophomore cornerback Sam Diss provided the highlight of the defense's season with a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown. However, the game proved to be just the start of a long, tough season for both squads, as Hamilton and Tufts were the only teams to finish 1-7 in the NESCAC last year.

Field Hockey | Tufts improves to 3-1 with win

The field hockey team is on a roll — a three-game win streak that has seen 13 unanswered goals and a Player of the Week nod from the conference. Its latest victory came Wednesday night on Bello Field, when Tufts defeated UMass Dartmouth with ease, 6-0.

David McIntyre | The Beautiful Game

For those who didn't see it last year, The Beautiful Game is a column about one of my favorite sports and the most popular sport in the world: professional soccer. Last semester, I dealt with issues ranging from the Champions League to the development of the MLS, and everything in between. One of the great things about soccer is that it always provides fresh storylines. Accordingly, this week, I'll be writing on probably the most-well known foreign league to Americans, the English Premier League (EPL); more specifically, I'll discuss how it has turned into a two-horse race.

Women's Soccer | Jumbos earn draw with No. 23 Wheaton

After No. 23 Wheaton College battled back from an early Tufts score to go up 2-1, the women's soccer team netted the equalizer in the 74th minute with a penalty kick from senior co-captain midfielder Lauren O'Connor. The 2-2 deadlock held, and the Jumbos and Lyons concluded 110 minutes of tough play with a split decision.

Field Hockey | NESCAC rundown: five teams in the top 15

It is no secret that the NESCAC is very good at field hockey. The conference boasts four national champions and five runners-up since 1998, and during this span, four different teams have made championship-game appearances. Perhaps never before, however, has there been so much uncertainty about who has the potential to go all the way.

This column is not about that big game that happened over the weekend. It will never speculate on who the greatest athletes of all time are. This column will not answer the question "Will the Green Bay Packers repeat as Super Bowl Champions?"

Football | Tufts drops spread offense for more balanced attack

The football team has abandoned the no-huddle spread offense that lit up the scoreboard in 2010 in favor of a more balanced attack of runs and short passes, a plan that was on display Friday night when Tufts scrimmaged Bowdoin on Bello Field in its first action against an opposing defense.

he term "legend" in sports is tossed around far too much by our generation. We have only been around for a small part of sports history, and we tend to forget that a lot happened long before we were watching.

Inside the NFL | Playing the odds: Top teams after two weeks

Before the start of every NFL season, every sports website, whether it is ESPN.com or CBSSports.com, runs a grid featuring its respective self-proclaimed "experts" and their preseason Super Bowl predictions. While their insight is often valuable and sometimes correct, the most entertaining way to assess a team's chance at lifting the Lombardi Trophy is to look no further than its betting odds in Sin City. The Daily takes a look at how those odds, through two weeks, are matching up to reality.

Women's Cross Country | Jumbos earn victory at Maine Invitational

The women's cross country team opened the season in stellar fashion at the Maine Invitational at Bowdoin College on Saturday. Facing teams who bested them at the end of last year, the Jumbos made a statement to start off the fall, taking the team title over a field containing several quality squads.
