Medford Director of Veterans Services Michael Durham has been reinstated afterbeing placed on administrative leave on Sept. 17. According to a notice emailed to Durham on Oct. 15, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn authorized his reinstatement after Dr. Joseph Begany found him psychologically fit for duty.
The director of veterans' services for the City of Medford, Michael Durham, was escorted from City Hall by Medford police officers on Friday, Sept. 17 after being placed on paid administrative leave by Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. At the time, Durham was given a notice from the mayor’s office explaining the action and demanding that Durham undergo psychological evaluation.
Jewish members of the Tufts community observed Rosh Hashanah during the first week of classes with programming by campus organizations. The holiday took place over a period of two days, with the final day coinciding with the first day of classes for undergraduate students.
The clinic offered vaccines to any and all veterans provided that they were registered for VA health care. The clinic was designed to efficiently distribute doses to a population that was both deserving and in need of vaccination. Marc Silvestri, director of veterans services for the City of Revere, discussed the process of realizing this goal.
"[The project] would like to celebrate the enrichments given to the community, from the diversity brought from immigrants … to highlight their own stories, their backgrounds, but also in order to achieve a better understanding of how we as a community, and especially specifically from the Human Rights Commission, can be supportive of their needs and their challenges," commissioner Lara Versari said at the March 17 meeting.
"Over the [last two years], we have seen a 51% increase in first-generation-to-college applicants, a 43% increase in international applicants, a 54% increase in Black applicants, a 46% increase in Latinx applicants, and overall a 30% increase in Early Decision applications from US students of color," Dean of Admissions JT Duck wrote in an email to the Daily.
This trend is associated with the fewer number of students residing on campus, according to director of Counseling and Mental Health Service Julie Ross.
The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) recently published data on young voters and their role in the 2020 election. The research found that turnout among young voters increased significantly and played a vital role in determining the election’s results.
Department Chair Deborah Schildkraut explained that this initiative started because of discussions happening among students.
