Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida and mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, was killed Sunday by American special forces in Pakistan, President Barack Obama announced last night in a nationally televised address.
"On nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al Qaida's terror: Justice has been done," Obama said.
Bin Laden had been one of the mostwanted men in the world for nearly a decade. He was killed during a firefight in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that was the result of an operation that began last August when American intelligence received new information about bin Laden's whereabouts.
