Injuries leave Colorado Avalanche out in the cold

The battle for first place in the National Hockey League's Northwest division is proving just how important that a division title is once the playoffs start. The winner gets at least the third seed in the postseason, which means home-cookin' and a weaker opponent to feast upon for at least the opening round. For the Colorado Avalanche and the Edmonton Oilers this year, the division title also means avoiding the eighth playoff spot, a.k.a. the sacrificial lamb for the top seed in the Western Conference, which will probably be either St. Louis or Detroit. That eighth spot is not guaranteed, either, because at 67 and 71 points respectively, Colorado and Edmonton are in stiff competition with each other and a host of other teams for the final playoff spot.

Second Amendment does not protect individual gun ownership

Recently, I came upon a 1939 Supreme Court case which gave the definitive (and seldom-quoted) interpretation of the Second Amendment that makes gun control absolutely constitutional. The Second Amendment is worded as follows: "a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."

Why campus politics are bad

Democracy was a good idea in the beginning. It was a noble idea in one sense, a form of government intended to give the society it governed as much control over itself as possible. The fathers of democracy thought it would also give the individual control over his own destiny. It may well have done that, to some degree.

Smorgasbord of buffet options in area entices Tufts students

As outstanding as the food at Carmichael and Dewick might be, it does get repetitive over time. But finding a way for a group of people to agree upon a single restaurant can be a hassle. There are several area buffets that can come to the rescue, offering a variety of non-dining hall food under one roof for a flat rate. But what exactly do you get for your money?

The Educational Policy Committee (EPC) recently completed its six-year review of the curriculum at Tufts and has formulated three proposals that suggest varying degrees of change in the University's current core requirements for graduation. Jazz ensemble creates music that stands alone from the rest

Setting new precedents for college students in the music industry, The Elio DeLuca Module is reminiscent of the greats of classic jazz. Simple yet complex, new and creative yet classic, this band takes something old and reshapes it, adding its own preferences and flares. Everything on the album, Green Upright Piano, was written and arranged by DeLuca himself, and produced on his own label. Each song has its own unique sound and stands alone from the rest.

Romantic tale of Scottish town a theatrical treasure

Forget Broadway in Boston. If you haven't seen a musical theater production at the Boston Conservatory, believe me, you are missing out. The school, which specializes in the education of students in musical theater and music, is one of Boston's treasures. Every season it puts together a top-notch show. This past weekend, the school presented Lerner and Loewe's much beloved but often forgotten musical, Brigadoon. The show was dedicated to their President Emeritus William Seymour, who had been asking the school to do his favorite musical for years. Without a doubt, the Conservatory's outstanding production of Brigadoon has made President Seymour very proud.

Online market for stocks becoming more popular

If those numbers constantly scrolling at the bottom of the screen on CNN don't make your head spin, online investing may be something that might appeal to you. The ease of online investing attracts many people to sign up at sites such as www.etrade.com or www.dljdirect.com to make fast money on the web without having to go through the complicated process of actual trading. Online brokers are also cashing in on this phenomenon: USA Today reported that online investing companies will spend more money on advertising than marketing king McDonalds in an attempt to reel in more would-be traders.

16mm will premiere its film 'MacGuffin' in Barnum

Most Tufts students have never heard of 16mm Conspiracy, but since its inception in 1998 the group has made three films, including Clotho's Gambit (1998), MacGuffin (1999), and So Low (2000). Though it is in its third year, 16mm remains one of the school's most inconspicuous organizations. With the premiere of its 1999 effort coming up next week and with the additional recent work on So Low, however, 16mm would like this to change and is trying to get more Tufts students involved in filmmaking.
