Bush on the border

It's hard to leave a legacy when you don't have support. President Bush came back to one of his pet issues, immigration, in a speech he gave yesterday in the border town of Yuma, Ariz. While the President seems clearly able to understand and articulate the extent of the immigration problem, he's not offering the country any clear-cut solutions.

Activism and feminism at Tufts

When I questioned the need for bias awareness on Tufts' campus and the effectiveness of other similar activist groups (in the March 13 Viewpoint, "What's the point of bias intervention anyway?"), I expected a wave of hostility complete with alienation, death threats, and a protesting Facebook.com group. Instead, the flood of compliments and praise for the article made me realize that nearly everyone is sick of phony activism. I am too.

Applaud the message, don't scold the messenger

There seems to be quite an uproar around a certain Viewpoint written by Paul Szerlip on March 29, "Applaud the pre-meds ... applaud the problems." Many people seem to have the impression that Szerlip was simply lashing out at pre-meds in general, and Hayley Marcus and Brian Schurko even wrote Viewpoints of their own in angry rebuttal of Szerlip's opinion.

Daniel Halper | A Southerner opines

On March 23, 15 British sailors and marines were taken hostage by Iran. Accused of entering the territorial waters of the Iranian regime, the hostages were paraded and humiliated on Iranian television and have since been released. Americans, as well as the British, watched with apprehension, as the fate of these brave men and woman was uncertain.
