Climate change: A unique opportunity

In the words of President Barack Obama, it was a “shellacking.”November 2, 2010, the day the Republican Party netted a historic 63 seats in the House of Representatives, proved to be a catastrophe for domestic initiatives that would mitigate climate change. The number of seats captured by the ...

Jumbo Steps: Word Up

The English dictionary is rad, but its organization is a bit archaic. For convenience’s sake, alphabetical order does the job for a quick and dirty search. The English dictionary is rather successful in denotatively capturing the essence of every word ever coined, created and carried from century to ...

Pop Filter: Eliminating the negatives

When I choose a piece to work on, I ask myself, how does it show off what my group is good at, and how does it play around our weaknesses? As members have rotated in and out over the years, I’ve had to continuously reevaluate how to do this. Part of the reason why I’ve found that people are more ...

Channeling Ina: Rut-busting dining hall hacks

It’s the time of the semester where we’ve all realized that the dining halls operate on a six-week rotating schedule, and while we all like our routine as much as Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, sometimes it’s good to give your taste buds something different. Even on our busiest days, it is worth ...

Outside of the Boot: The return of the Champions League

The Champions League is back. For the next two weeks, soccer fans everywhere will be treated to showdowns between Europe’s best. On Tuesday, Barcelona looked to continue their quest to become the first repeat champion since 1989 when they hosted Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the quarterfinal. The game started with Barcelona dominant, but a defensive lapse gave the away side an early lead. Fernando Torres’s 25th-minute strike had the pundits writing the former Chelsea man’s redemption story, but only until a clumsy challenge on Sergio Busquets, and a second yellow card saw the script changed. The 10-man Atletico side fought valiantly to absorb wave after wave of Barcelona attack, but two Luis Suarez goals saw Barcelona leave the Camp Nou with a 2-1 victory. Bayern Munich was also in action on Tuesday, defeating Benfica 1-0.

Bridge the Gap: Waiting on a way to keep cyclists safe

Urban cycling is here to stay. That might seem obvious. But we live in a world where many honestly believe that roads are only meant for motor vehicles. So I reiterate, especially now that more people are choosing to forgo cars in favor of alternative transportation — cycling is here to stay. But ...

Flashes of Brilliance: 100 meters in the blink of an eye

For two weeks this summer, people all across this world will watch people walk as fast as they can without running. We will care about which horse has been taught to dance the best. Screen Time: They’re just that perfect

An AV Club commenter has recently taken to keeping a running tally: number of "Jane the Virgin" (2014-present) episodes to date and number of bad or average episodes. Given that one of these numbers hasn't budged past zero, I'm clearly not the only one who thinks this plucky, ...

The Story of Stories: Attack of the personal narrative

Because I continuously guilt myself into being a good Catholic, I actually did give something up for Lent this year. And, well, it’s the same thing I’ve given up every year since entering college: social media. Now, before you groan and close the window in which you're reading this, let me just ...

Jersey Over Apron: Lowering the rim lowers the game

The ABCs of Literature: Terry Pratchett

Even when people talk about the fantasy genre with affection, remembering the books that they first loved as children and that continue to enchant them today, they rarely talk about fantasy as serious literature, the kind that reflects our world back to us and betters our understanding of it. There's ...

We go all the way now. No more of those international weekend interruptions that Ryan and I dislike until the title is decided.First order of business: will Leicester be able to hang on? Channeling Ina: Essential cookbooks for the young millennial

Outside of the Boot: The dreaded international break

As students across the nation return to campus this week, so do the best international soccer players to their respective clubs. However, instead of a week enjoying the sun (and maybe a drink or too), players will spend the week with their countrymen on international duty. As a fan of the Premier League, there are no two words I dislike hearing more than “international break.”

The Arena: Going for brokered
