Office of Public Safety issues temporary card-access restrictions in Medford/Somerville, Grafton campuses following Brown shooting

The Office of Public Safety announced temporary “security enhancements” for buildings on the Medford/Somerville and Grafton campuses in an email to the Tufts community Monday afternoon. These changes follow an active shooter incident at Brown University on Saturday that resulted in the deaths of two students and the hospitalization of nine others.

Medford City Council approves divestment ordinance, pushes Salem Street vote for next week

The Medford City Council approved its Values-Aligned Local Investments Ordinance on Wednesday, overriding a mayoral veto. The body also voted to postpone a vote to reconsider an element of the Salem Street Corridor District rezoning project until next week.

Federal judge rules Trump administration violated First Amendment when targeting pro-Palestine students for deportation

On Tuesday, a federal judge in Massachusetts ruled that the Trump administration had illegally used the threat of deportation to silence noncitizens in higher education who protested the war in Gaza in support of Palestine. In his ruling, U.S. District Judge William G. Young reiterated evidence and information surrounding the government’s decision to revoke several F-1 student visas, including that of Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk.

Tufts adopts statement of institutional pluralism

University President Sunil Kumar announced Wednesday afternoon that the university will adopt a position of institutional pluralism after nearly a year of considering a position of institutional neutrality. Tufts’ Institutional Neutrality Working Group made its final recommendation to the Board of Trustees, which affirmed the statement in August.

Boston City Council unanimously passes resolution supporting SMFA professors of the practice

The Boston City Council passed a resolution supporting the professors of the practice at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts on Aug. 6. Negotations for the SMFA PoPs’ first contract began in April 2024. The resolution represents the most recent attempt to address prolonged negotiations and build support for the PoPs.

ICE official confirms use of Canary Mission in Rümeysa Öztürk’s arrest

In an American Association of University Professors lawsuit against Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the administration’s deportation policy, Peter Hatch, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency official, testified that ICE used Canary Mission for leads in its investigation of noncitizen pro-Palestine student activists.

Rümeysa Öztürk comes home, speaks at press conference in Boston

Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk returned to Massachusetts on Saturday and spoke publicly to a crowd of reporters at Boston Logan International Airport following her release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention. Öztürk was joined in speaking by members of her legal team, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass.
