Clearing up misconceptions

Ahmed Elewa, the outreach coordinator for the Muslim American Society's Boston chapter, spoke to an audience of around 30 people last night in Pearson 104. Elewa was joined on a panel by sophomore Hawazin Naseef and junior Shirwac Mohamed during the event, which was sponsored by Tufts' Muslim Students Association (MSA) and entitled "Islamic Awareness Week Revisited - Misconceptions about Islam." The event featured a speech from Elewa and a question and answer session during which he and the two student panelists fielded inquiries from the audience. Tufts' original Islamic Awareness week was at the beginning of the month, but sponsors felt that more discussion-especially related to myths about the religion -was needed, according to sophomore and MSA Co-Chair Nayema Khan.

Daniel Halper | A Southerner opines

Aceh is a tropical paradise that attracted thousands of tourists per year until a devastating tsunami struck Indonesia on Dec. 26, 2004. The concomitant death and destruction is well known. Also well documented in the world press has been the slow pace of the clean up operation, which affects the recovery of the tourist industry - the mainstay of the province's economy.

In Our Midst | One Jumbo goes with the wind to build a budding business

To many of Tufts' thousands of Arts and Sciences students, Anderson Hall is strange, uncharted territory. A freak recitation or a wrong turn on the way to Brown and Brew might bring a non-engineer into this building, where they would find the walls adorned with mysterious equations and photographs of intelligent-looking graduate students.

Bacow and the real bigotry

As the new Editor-in-Chief of The Primary Source, I must express strong disappointment and criticism of President Bacow's April 24 viewpoint in the Daily. In his ongoing campaign to vilify The Primary Source, Bacow has condemned our publication for being intolerant and unfair in our depiction of the problems in modern Islam.

FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF | Bests and worsts

There's something funny and familiar about the last day of school; it's never too unusual, but each one remains unassailably unique in what it represents. At the Daily, the last day of school marks our last issue of the semester, a time for us to stop (finally) and to reflect before we jump into our Commencement issue that hits the Hill the weekend of May 20.

I'm writing this column from Colton, Calif., which is outside of San Bernadino. My friend and I are here to see Rage Against the Machine play the Coachella festival on Sunday, but we've spent two days hanging out with my cousin and her fianc?© in Colton.

Silence implies consent

I wish to applaud President Bacow for taking time out of his busy schedule last week to write a rebuttal to "Islam - Arabic Translation: Submission," The Primary Source's latest piece of controversy. The President used common sense logic to demonstrate the ways in which the article, with its one-sided lens and total disregard for historical context, so obviously mischaracterized an entire student population. I expected no less from the president of Tufts University.

England's biggest buzz band proves it isn't just monkeying around

It hasn't been long since the Arctic Monkeys laid claim to the title of best nearly-mainstream high-energy indie rock band. After these Brits gained global acclaim from last year's "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" and its singles "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" and "When the Sun Goes Down," it would be natural to think that the band could coast on their success for longer than just a year, taking time to polish and admire their best album awards from Time Magazine, New Music Express and the Brit Awards.

Kate Peck | Wealth and Hellness

In writing this semester, a few people have approached me about the title of the column: "Wealth and Hellness." They say they get the hellness, but where's the wealth? Shouldn't I be discussing financial issues?
