Concert Review | Salonen, Josefowicz dazzle audiences with BSO

Rarely does one get to witness a performance of a work that resulted from the collaboration between a world?class performer and a conductor/composer. But that is exactly what attendees of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) this past weekend experienced when violinist Leila Josefowicz performed Esa?PekkaSalonen's 2009 Violin Concerto - which won the Grawemeyer Award, perhaps the most prestigious prize a piece of new classical music can win - under the baton of maestro Salonen himself. The concerto, which was written for Josefowicz, was flanked by Maurice Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin" (1919), an orchestration of a 1917 piano work, and Igor Stravinsky's entire score to "The Firebird" (1910).

Among the benefits of a liberal arts education, some may say, is the opportunity for students to build relationships with professors, a feat that can be difficult at larger institutions. Even at Tufts, with an advertised student-faculty ratio of nine to one, it is not always easy to interact with professors outside of the classroom.

Going green has never been so easy. Society has come to embrace fuel?efficient cars, electric?powered buses, compost bins in dormitories, recycled napkins and, more recently, eco?friendly clothes. Beal bursts onto scene with gripping vocals

Willis Earl Beal's debut album, "Acousmatic Sorcery," is a deceptively simple record. At most, it features Beal's voice, a guitar and a few sparse instruments. The songs haven't been heavily produced since they were made with old karaoke equipment and a secondhand microphone. Despite its simplicity, though, the album shines by showcasing an extremely talented musician and vocalist.

Weekend student production of'Romeo and Juliet' spices up the Hill

"Romeo and Juliet" is one of Shakespeare's most well?known plays. Adapted in myriad ways - most memorably in the original Broadway production of "West Side Story" (1957) and most infamously in Jet Li's bloody "Romeo Must Die" (2000) - "Romeo and Juliet" has become a cliche in and of itself. The challenge, then, is to create a unique and meaningful production that brings something new to a well?worn story.

The Cabin in the Woods' reinvigorates stale slasher film genre

Genre films are at once breeding grounds for originality and staleness. Fantasy, science fiction and horror have introduced powerful cultural icons, but they also have an infamous tendency to descend into 11?part franchises or endless remakes. In an era when the latter has come to dominate the horror genre, "The Cabin in the Woods" injects a much?needed critique with startling originality, paying homage to its predecessors while ripping apart their weaknesses at the same time.
