Tufts, Wesleyan 22–20: A win by a slim margin

September after dark makes a football game feel bigger. The lights sharpen everything: edges of pads, breath in the air, the collective wince of a crowd when a return man gets the corner and the volume turns from murmur to ‘Oh my god, go.’ Ellis Oval had all of that Saturday, and then some. Tufts defeated Wesleyan 22–20, a win stapled together with all the duct tape a football team keeps in the equipment trunk: defense, field position, special teams, grit, more special teams and, when it absolutely had to happen, one burst through daylight to slam the door.

QB Q&A: Journeyman quarterbacks

Every free-agent cycle, there always seems to be the same free-agent quarterbacks on the market. Quarterbacks who just can’t seem to hold on to their jobs at their subpar organizations and end up like a seed in a hurricane, passed from one city to another. These so-called journeyman quarterbacks are about as ubiquitous as the attention-dominating superstar quarterbacks, yet they don’t share the same spotlight.

The 90-Minute Breakdown: Entering the home stretch

Last week’s UCL quarter-final first-legs were full of surprises. Arsenal stunned Real Madrid 3–0 at home, with two incredible free-kick goals from Declan Rice (more on him later). Paris Saint-Germain beat Aston Villa 3–1 in Paris, whileInter Milan edged Bayern Munich with an 88th-minute winner from Frattesi. Barcelona smashed Dortmund 4–0, and even with the second leg at Signal Iduna Park, a comeback was unlikely. Even though Dortmund triumphed 3–1 on Wednesday, Barcelona still progressed.

QB Q&A: Nick Saban's best NFL quarterback

After his 17 seasons coaching the Alabama Crimson Tide, there’s no doubt that Nick Saban is the greatest coach of the century, if not of all time. With seven NCAA titles, Saban’s teams have been loaded with premier talent, including four Heisman Trophy winners. But which of his quarterbacks were truly worthy of being Saban disciples? Below, I’ve ranked each quarterback from worst to best.

The 90-Minute Breakdown: Tournament competition intensifies

Welcome back to the 90 Minute Breakdown! We’re entering the last stretch of the season, and the intensity is certainly present. GamesLast week ended with the highlight of the break: the South American clásico, Brazil vs. Argentina. Playing in Argentina without Messi, the reigning world champions delivered a masterclass, winning 4–1. Argentina’s goals came from Julián Álvarez (4’), Enzo Fernández (12’), Mac Allister (37’), and Giuliano Simeone (71’). Brazil's lone moment came with Cunha’s goal in the 26th minute. Rodrygo and Vinicius? Barely touched the ball. With the next World Cup just 435 days away, Argentina looks more dangerous than ever.

The 90-Minute Breakdown: Standout performances and controversy

Barcelona is reaping the rewards of La Masia once again. In their win over Real Sociedad, two of the four goals were assisted and scored by academy graduates. Dani Olmo provided two assists, while Gerard Martín and Marc Casadó netted their first-ever Barcelona goals. Instead of flashy celebrations, the team opted for a full-squad embrace — pure joy.

The big game isn’t football

The spectacle is great, yes, but exhausting. Only the NFL can justify their dependence on commercials by making them a part of the product. Why are we accepting the overreach of advertising into places that should resist it, like sports? The Olympics understands this better –– its lack of any advertisements deeply changes the way we engage with sports for two brief weeks every two years.

Tufts football takes down Middlebury 17–7

In a game packed with excitement, Tufts football ended its season with a winning record of 7–2 coming out of their most recent senior day win against Middlebury on Saturday. At the start of the game, Middlebury won the coin toss and deferred to Tufts, letting them receive the ball first.

Full Court Press: The NFL needs to pull the plug on Deshaun Watson

If you thought the Deshaun Watson saga was over, think again. On Monday, Sept. 9, the Browns quarterback was once again accused of sexual assault via a court filing in Harris County, Texas that concerns an incident from October 2020. In 2022, Watson served an 11-game suspension after having 24 lawsuits filed against him earlier that year. As of Sept. 2024, 23 of the 24 lawsuits from 2022 have been settled, but the most recent case may be the most damning yet.

Football’s sickening reality of racism

As 17-year-old Endrick danced under the picturesque Wembley floodlights, the world was given a taste of Brazil’s post-Neymar era. It was an exhibition of finesse and skill as the youngster broke the deadlock against a Bellingham-inspired England side. A historic friendly in a historic venue. For much of that weekend, Brazil’s script wrote itself with the help of its young stars until it was once again deeply scarred by football’s age-old, sickening reality of racism.

Sports and Society: Making stuff up

The College Football Playoff is ridiculous. To demonstrate, let me paraphrase a conversation I heard between national analysts Danny Kanell and Ryen Russillo on the latter’s podcast about which teams deserve to make the playoff: Russillo argued that if Georgia beats Alabama, the question then becomes if Florida State should get into the playoffs over Texas, even with their backup quarterback.

Offense marches football to a big win over the Wesleyan Cardinals

Parents weekend and the Play for Pink dayhad the Tufts football team fired up, and right out of the gate, the squad was dominant. Under the lights and in front of a big crowd, junior running back Chartellis Reece started off the game for Tufts with an eight-yard carry. Junior quarterback Michael Berluti ran the ball later in the drive, gaining 24 yards and the third first down of the possession. Berluti put a 17-yard pass into the hands of junior wide receiver Cade Moore to send the Jumbos up 7–0. Sophomore kicker Vaughn Seelicke made the extra point. He went seven for seven in PATs on Saturday.
