MLS Between the Lines: The new laughing stock of MLS?

Just months after achieving the best record in club history, which earned them the 2025 Supporters’ Shield (a trophy awarded to the club with the highest total points in the regular season), the Philadelphia Union find themselves at rock bottom of the league table.

Tufts men’s lacrosse defeats Middlebury to maintain win streak

Going into this year’s rivalry game, Tufts was the No. 1 seed on a 7–0 hot streak. Their opponent, No. 16 Middlebury, was on a two-game win streak.“We aim to treat every opponent the same way, but in-conference (especially [Middlebury]), gets some extra fire behind it. Middlebury has been pretty dominant historically,” senior Victor Salcedo wrote in a message to the Daily.

The Full Court Press: Mirror images in March

Whenever March Madness rolls around, a sort of mythos always emerges surrounding the storylines and narratives that go into that year’s games. With every buzzer beater or Cinderella story, these legends are deepened, etching themselves into the history of what very well may be the most revered sporting event in the United States.

Moments ‘til Madness: The first weekend delivered

Finally, we are in the middle of the best month of the year: March. As always, there have been countless amazing games and we have gotten to see almost all of the nation’s best players hoop thus far. Not to mention, the coaching carousel has already taken its course, whether it’s Providence hiring USF’s Brian Hodgson, Gerry McNamara returning home to Syracuse or one of the best jobs in the sport opening up at UNC. But the tournament is the real focus this time of year. Here are the most important storylines from the first weekend.

The unassuming athletic powerhouse in a city of giants

When people think of Tufts University, they think of strong academics, Jumbo the elephant and a tight-knit community marked by quirky personalities. Unbeknownst to most, however, Tufts has quietly developed into an athletic powerhouse at the Division III level, despite the general lack of interest among the student body and attention from the university tour guides.

Men’s basketball progresses in basketball playoffs

Tufts came into Friday fired up for their matchup against Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg that seemed sure to go in their favor. Outmatching the Nittany Lions’ offensive stats and looming over their starting line up physically, a win for the Jumbos looked promising at the tip off.

Beyond the Sidelines: Just trade A.J. already

As NFL general managers are in full trade mode for this off season, perhaps one of the most discussed topics is whether the Philadelphia Eagles are going to trade star wide receiver A.J. Brown. As an Eagles fan, I might be a little biased in stating his popularity, but where he goes (if he leaves) has the potential to affect the preparation for all NFL head coaches for next season.

Moments ‘til Madness: Naming the nation’s best

March is finally here. With less than a week until Selection Sunday, conference tournaments are well underway and the upcoming Power 5 matchups are going to be must-see TV. As the season wraps up, I thought it would be a great time to take stock of the best players in the nation who have defined this year in college hoops with my picks for the All-America first team. The trend of first-year dominance continues, with three of the five selections being in their first college basketball seasons, while the two others are senior leaders for their squads. Let’s get into the list.

The Intangibles: Magic to machinery — growing up as a fan

We were all once fans, captivated by what we believed to be magic. The mark of childhood is devotion to the magician — the athlete’s transformation into an idol, a deity, a hero to be defended unceasingly against criticism. This was me. Kobe Bryant was my hero. I named our German Shepherd puppy after him. The moment I learned that Kobe couldn’t be my idol marked the end of my childhood.

Tufts men’s basketball falls to Trinity in the NESCAC semifinals

The No. 2 Tufts men’s basketball team faced off against No. 3 Trinity College in the NESCAC semifinals. Missing leading scorer and rebounder senior forward Scott Gyimesi, the Jumbos had to find other ways to adapt. They showed a strong performance but ultimately could not overcome the Bantams’ offense. Despite cutting the deficit to five with less than four minutes remaining, Tufts ultimately lost 80–70.

Tufts men’s ice hockey loses to Williams in first round of NESCAC playoffs

Despite being the higher-ranked team, the Tufts men’s ice hockey team entered the quarterfinals of the NESCAC playoffs with some anxiety about its opponent, Williams. Throughout the season, the Jumbos continually struggled to make offensive plays against the Ephs’ defense — especially junior goalie Harrison Fogel. Of the three games that went into overtime this season, two were against Williams. Moreover, the last three games Tufts played against Williams ended in overtime losses: two this season and one last season.

What the NBA can learn from its 1980 season

The Tufts Daily was founded in 1980, so an anniversary edition naturally invites a look back at what else was happening in the world at that moment. The 1979–80 NBA season is a great place to start — not just as a historical snapshot, but as a case study in how a league can improve itself.
