Dr. Mona Hanna, activist who helped expose Flint water crisis, speaks at Tufts

She discussed her research and her ongoing efforts to advance public health and combat infant poverty. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Margie Skeer, a professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine.

Recipients of Anne E. Borghesani Memorial Prize reflect on final projects, lessons learned

The 2024 Anne E. Borghesani Memorial Prize was awarded to five Tufts students this year, who presented their final projects at a dinner ceremony on Nov. 7. The prize, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000, is given annually to select undergraduates who propose a project concerning an international issue. It allows recipients to pursue research projects, intern, volunteer or plan a course of study in accordance with their project.

Tightropes, tumblers and trunks: Jumbo’s Revenge hits the ring

One night, as third-year combined-degree School of the Museum of Fine Arts student Candy Li skipped across the Academic Quad, she suddenly became possessed by the statue of Jumbo. She felt its angry spirit and learned the dark truth of Jumbo’s life. While many believe Jumbo to have been a beautiful circus elephant with a heroic end, Li discovered how he was overworked, used and abused. She became filled with rage and vengeance for both Jumbo and other neglected circus animals.

Science and Engineering Complex renamed the Tsungming Tu Complex after major donation from math professor

The Science and Engineering Complex has been renamed the Tsungming Tu Complex, or TTC for short. Tufts announced the change on Wednesday, following an over $10-million-dollar gift from mathematics professor Loring Tu. Tu made the donation in honor of his late grandfather, Tsungming Tu, a pioneer in modern Taiwanese medicine known for his work addressing opium addiction in Taiwan.

Onero Institute panel discusses state of US democracy in wake of 2024 election

The Tufts chapter of the Onero Institute, a student-led research organization focused on global affairs, held its inaugural panel on Friday. The panel, titled “The Democracy We Need,” focused on the state of U.S. democracy and the results of the 2024 election. Panelists included Consuelo Cruz, an associate professor of political science at Tufts; Malik Mufti, a professor of political science at Tufts; and Sheri Berman, a professor of political science atBarnard College.

Tufts to launch mobile-friendly parking permit system in 2025

Tufts will roll out a new parking permit system on Jan. 2, 2025, designed to streamline the permit-purchasing process across its Medford/Somerville, Grafton and School of the Museum of Fine Arts campuses. This transition will replace the existing parking permit system, which will officially end on Dec. 23.

Rebecca Corke hired as the new pre-law advisor

A graduate of Suffolk University Law School, she arrives at Tufts after serving as an Assistant District Attorney at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. BREAKING: Bárbara Brizuela appointed as next dean of the School of Arts and Sciences

Bárbara M. Brizuela will serve as the 18th dean of the School of Arts and Sciences after serving as interim dean since July 2024, the university announced on Monday. A professor in the Department of Education for over 23 years and the dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences since 2022, Brizuela’s appointment as dean is effective immediately.

Tufts Federalist Society hosts debate between Tufts professor, Project 2025 contributor

The Tufts Federalist Society held a debate on Oct. 24 focusing on whether Project 2025 —the Heritage Foundation’s 900-page blueprint for the next Republican president — is a threat to democracy. Jonathan Wolfson, a contributor to Project 2025 and the Chief Legal Officer and Policy Director at the Cicero Institute, and Samuel Gebru, Tufts professor of the practice in the department of political science, argued for and against Project 2025, respectively. The conversation was moderated by senior and Federalist Society co-President Trent Bunker.

Tufts will operate a pub Thursday nights in Hotung Café

After years of student advocacy, Tufts Dining will operate a “pop-up pub” on Thursday nights in Hotung Café, with the first pub night scheduled for Nov. 7 from 5–9:30pm. The pub, tentatively titled “Pop Up Pub: The Tufts Campus Pub & Social Spot,” will be open to Tufts community members of all ages, according to Patti Klos, senior director of dining services.
